Week 1 - Signs & Visual Communications, Part 1


Defining terms related to concepts in Visual Communication; for each term do the following:a.) type the word, itself, b.) explain the meaning, c.) give an example by re-posting a picture found online

     1.)Alphabet- set of letters or symbols in a fixed order, used to represent the basic sounds of a language; in particular, the set of letters from A to Z. 

  2.)street sign- a public display of a message 

 3.)Advertisement- a notice or announcement in a public medium promoting a product, service, or event or publicizing a job vacancy.





4.)Constellation-a group of stars forming a recognizable pattern that is traditionally named after its apparent form or identified with a mythological figure. Modern astronomers divide the sky into eighty-eight constellations with defined boundaries.






5.)ASCII symbols-(American Standard Code for Information Interchange) is the most common format for text files in computers and on the Internet. In an ASCII file, each alphabetic, numeric, or special character is represented with a 7-bit binary number (a string of seven 0s or 1s). 128 possible characters are defined.



6.)Electronic symbols-An electronic symbol is a pictogram used to represent various electrical and electronicdevices (such as wires, batteries, resistors, and transistors) in a schematic diagram of anelectrical or electronic circuit.


7.)Morse code-
  1. an alphabet or code in which letters are represented by combinations of long and short signals of light or sound.

8.)American sign language
  1. a form of sign language developed in the US and used also in English-speaking parts of Canada.
    9.)Glypha hieroglyphic character or symbol; a pictograph.

9.accessible route sign-disabled wheel route 

10.information sign-assistance for information on brochures 

11.food-what people eat day and night

12.telephone signs- contact people

13.hiking-where people walk for a long distance 

14.boat-where people sail on the ocean

15. anchor -what sailers use in their boats

16.diver-where people go under water

17.boat-where people sail on water

18.cruise ship- you go on vacation and you see them on beaches 

19.someone swimming-you see them at parks or your own home

20.fish and hook-when people go fishing 

21.boat--docks or lakes 

22.person skiing-snow parks

23.ice skating -where go in doors or outdoors 

24.jet skiing-beaches


25.sled-where you go when there is snow

    In a few brief sentences, please explain what exactly do the stars, stripes, and colors present in the official flag of the United States of America symbolize?


the color means on the flag is 
The colors of the pales (the vertical stripes) are those used in the flag of the United States of America; White signifies purity and innocence, Red, hardiness & valor, and Blue, the color of the Chief (the broad band above the stripes) signifies vigilance, perseverance & justice.

Meaning of Red and White Stripes on US FlagThere was an act that said that the flag of the thirteen United States would have thirteen stripes, alternated with red and white, and the union would be thirteen stars, white in a field of blue, representing a new constellation.
